Assign a fixed, trained operator to each mill. Before installation, provide technical training covering:
Machine principles and component functions
Standard operating procedures
Emergency shutdown protocols
Basic troubleshooting
Untrained operators cause the majority of premature wear — overfeeding, foreign material ingress, and ignoring warning signs all stem from skill gaps.
2. Establish a Maintenance Protocol
Document a formal maintenance and safety control system. Your protocol should specify:
Approved lubricants and greases for each lubrication point
Safety lockout/tagout procedures
A written system prevents maintenance from being skipped during busy production periods.
3. Inspect and Replace Wear Parts Proactively
Schedule regular inspections based on running hours, not calendar time. Focus on:
Grinding rollers and blades — Check for chips, cracks, and uneven wear. Rotate or replace before damage spreads to the rotor
Fasteners — Verify nut and bolt torque before and after each shift. Vibration loosens connections quickly
Lubrication — Confirm grease levels at all points. Under-lubrication causes bearing failure; over-lubrication attracts dust and contaminates material
4. Service Bearings at Major Intervals
Every 500 operating hours, or when replacing grinding rollers:
Remove and clean dynamic spring bearings in the roller sleeve
Inspect races, cages, and rolling elements for pitting, scoring, or corrosion
Replace damaged bearings immediately — do not reuse compromised components
Re-lubricate using the specified grease type and quantity. Manual greasing is acceptable if automated systems are not installed
Bearing failure is the most common cause of catastrophic mill damage. Preventive replacement at scheduled intervals costs a fraction of emergency repairs.
Additional Best Practices
Feed consistently — Avoid surge feeding that overloads the mill and creates impact wear on blades
Screen material — Remove metal, stone, and oversized pieces before the mill. Magnetic separators and vibratory screens pay for themselves in blade life
