Single Shaft Shredder: Controlled Output for Softer Materials

Wanrooe single shaft shredders use a hydraulic pusher to feed material against a high-speed rotor with fixed blades. A screen below the cutting chamber controls output size — material stays in the chamber until it passes through. This produces uniform particles ideal for downstream processing or direct sale.

Key limitation: Single shaft shredders are designed for softer, less dense materials. For heavy, rigid, or abrasive feedstock — metal, stone, concrete, thick-walled pipes — a double shaft shredder is the better choice.

Materials Suited for Single Shaft Shredding

Plastics — Moldings, purgings, profiles, and film. Output becomes regrind for pelletizing or direct reuse in manufacturing.

Paper and cardboard — Confidential documents, packaging, and production waste. Shredded output feeds recycling pulp lines or RDF fuel preparation.

Copper cable — Household, telecom, and industrial wire including steel-wire-armored cable. Shredding liberates copper for granule recovery.

Aluminum — Used beverage cans, swarf, cable, and foil. Output is clean scrap metal ready for smelter resale.

Wood — Waste lumber, bark, and green waste. Shredded chips become biomass fuel, mulch, or particle board feedstock.

Textiles — Carpet rolls and tiles, garments, and fabric scrap. Output goes to fiber reclamation or RDF fuel production.

Foam — Production scrap and packaging waste. Shredded foam densifies and pelletizes for reuse.

Mixed household and commercial waste — MSW and commercial refuse. Shredded output becomes RDF or SRF fuel.

Not suitable: Heavy rigid materials such as metal castings, stones, asphalt, and concrete. These require double shaft or four shaft shredders with higher torque and more robust construction.

FAQ: Single Shaft Shredders

What output size can a single shaft shredder achieve?

Typically 10–100 mm depending on screen selection. Smaller screens increase residence time and reduce throughput. For sub-10 mm output, add a secondary granulator after the shredder.

Can I shred film and rigid plastic on the same machine?

Yes, but not optimally. Film is light and tends to wrap; rigid plastic feeds more consistently. If your mix varies significantly, consider a shredder with adjustable pusher pressure and variable rotor speed.

How does a single shaft differ from a double shaft shredder?

Single shaft uses one rotor plus a hydraulic ram and screen for uniform output. Double shaft uses two interlocking rotors for tearing action with no screen and variable output size. Single shaft is better for uniform particle size; double shaft handles heavier, bulkier, or more contaminated material.
