Traffic road safety barriers are essential devices for traffic control and crowd management. Made from HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE, they are widely used at highway exits, toll stations, bridges, parking lots, construction zones, and event venues.
Because these barriers are hollow and water-fillable, damaged units retain stagnant water—breeding mosquitoes and degrading structurally. With millions replaced annually, traffic barrier recycling is both an environmental necessity and a high-value market opportunity.
How to recycle traffic barriers?
Recycling plastic traffic barriers diverts waste from landfills while conserving virgin HDPE and PE resources. The process typically involves three stages:
1. Shredding & Crushing — Whole barriers are fed into a traffic barrier shredder for primary size reduction, then processed through a plastic crusher to produce uniform flakes (8–20mm).
2. Pulverizing — Flakes are ground into 10–120 mesh powder using a plastic pulverizer for applications like rotational molding and coatings.
3. Washing & Pelletizing — Material is washed, melted, and extruded into recycled HDPE granules for new products. Pre-shredding also compresses bulky barriers, reducing transport costs by up to 70%.
