The Paper Mill Waste Challenge

Paper mills generate substantial waste: plastics, steel wire, residual pulp, and mixed composites that are difficult to separate. Annual discharge is measured in hundreds of tons per facility. The waste stream includes sediment and scum from flocculation in sewage treatment, sludge from wastewater systems, and domestic waste from living areas. These materials combine into large, tangled objects that resist simple disposal. Finding an efficient size reduction solution is a critical operational priority for every paper mill.

What Is a Paper Mill Shredder?

A paper mill shredder handles both loose paper scrap and compressed bales. Loose paper — white paper, kraft paper, corrugated board, newspaper — can be processed by most shredder types. Baled paper is different. The dense, bound mass requires a single shaft shredder with a hydraulic pusher that feeds material against a high-speed rotor. The pusher prevents bales from bridging or stalling. Double shaft shredders struggle with bales because the material packs between blades and jams without consistent feeding force.

What It Processes

Paper mill light slag and rejects

Carton and packaging waste

Loose paper scraps and offcuts

Rag rope and twisted fiber rope from pulping operations

Pulper waste and rejects

Rag wire and metal-reinforced cable

FAQ: Paper Mill Waste Shredding

Can one shredder handle both paper bales and rope waste?

A single shaft shredder with adjustable pusher pressure handles both, though not optimally for every batch. For mills with highly variable waste streams, a dual-line setup — single shaft for bales, double shaft for rope and sludge — maximizes efficiency.

How do I prevent rope from wrapping around the rotor?

Rag rope and twisted fiber are prone to wrapping. Solutions: use a shredder with anti-wrap rotor geometry, maintain sharp blades to cut rather than pull, and feed rope in short lengths rather than continuous spools. Pre-cutting long ropes with a guillotine shear helps.

What output size is needed for RDF fuel preparation?

Most refuse-derived fuel specifications require 20–50 mm particles. This size burns efficiently in cement kilns and power plants without excessive dust. Screen selection on the shredder controls this range. Finer material may be needed for fluidized bed combustors.
