How to shred and recycle discarded denim clothing?

Time:2024-11-05

Background

Denim clothing is a timeless fashion staple loved by consumers worldwide. However, as fashion trends evolve and denim culture continues to grow, vast quantities of discarded denim garments are generated each year. Improper disposal of these textiles places significant strain on the environment through landfill waste and resource depletion. Recycling discarded denim has emerged as a sustainable and effective solution to address this growing challenge.

Recycling process

The denim recycling process begins with collection and sorting, where garments are gathered and categorized by material, color, and condition. In the pre-treatment stage, items are thoroughly cleaned and metal accessories (buttons, zippers, rivets) are removed. The prepared denim is then fed into an industrial shredder, which cuts the fabric into small pieces approximately several centimeters in size. These pieces are further refined by a crusher, reducing them to even smaller particles. Finally, fiber components are separated through physical or chemical methods, yielding recycled fibers suitable for producing new textiles, automotive interior materials, and eco-friendly building products.

Mechanical working principle

Shredder and Crusher Working Principles
In denim recycling, the shredder and crusher operate as an integrated system to progressively reduce material size.
Shredder Operation: The industrial shredder utilizes high-speed rotating blades that generate powerful shear and tear forces. These blades cut discarded denim garments into manageable pieces measuring several centimeters square. This initial size reduction facilitates efficient handling, transportation, and feeding into downstream equipment.

Crusher Operation: Driven by a high-torque motor, the crusher features a rapidly rotating hammer assembly. As denim fragments enter the crushing chamber, they undergo multiple mechanical actions — including rolling, shearing, impact, and grinding — simultaneously. This combined force progressively refines the material into smaller, uniform particles. Operators can adjust the final particle size and bulk density by modifying screen mesh specifications and rotor speed to meet specific end-product requirements.

Recycling advantages

Efficiency improvement: Through process optimization and technological upgrades, the recycling processing speed is significantly improved, labor dependence is reduced, labor costs are reduced, and the recycling business is made more economical.
Accurate classification: relying on intelligent recognition technology, high-precision detection and classification of the material, color, and composition of textiles such as clothing are carried out to ensure accurate collection of various materials and avoid resource waste caused by mixing.
Automation empowerment: Using automated equipment to replace manual operations, improving processing accuracy and consistency, reducing human errors, and improving overall efficiency and output quality through continuous operations.
Resource Recycling: Based on precise classification and efficient processing, we achieve efficient reuse of fiber grade materials, significantly reducing the consumption of raw materials, promoting the transformation of the textile industry towards a circular economy, and supporting green development and carbon neutrality goals.
