How to recycle discarded fiberglass fishing boats?

Time:2025-07-22

Current background

Abandoned fiberglass fishing boats, due to their lightweight and corrosion-resistant advantages, are widely used worldwide, with over ten million of them mainly concentrated in Asia. But its lifespan is 15-25 years, and a large number of fishing boats have entered the scrapping period. In China, more than 100000 boats are scrapped annually, with a recycling rate of less than 30%. Traditional disposal methods include landfilling, incineration, and disposal, which cause environmental problems: landfilling is difficult to degrade and pollutes soil/water; Burning releases toxic gases; Discarding and releasing microplastics poses a threat to the ecology.

Core value of fiberglass

In terms of reinforcement, it is combined with resin to form fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), which enhances the impact resistance and lightweighting of structures such as automobiles and ships; Composite with cement to produce glass fiber reinforced concrete (GRC), enhancing the crack resistance of building components and prolonging durability.
In terms of functionality, insulating support circuit board substrate and wire conduit; Suitable for high temperature resistance (600 ℃+) and non flammability, fireproof cloth and industrial insulation cotton; Corrosion resistance helps with environmentally friendly filtration.

Recycling process

The main process for recycling fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) is “pretreatment → crushing and separation → reuse”: first, clean the surface residue, and use a double shaft shredder to shred large pieces of waste into<200mm blocks;

Further pulverize into<10mm particles using a hammer mill, and separate metal impurities through magnetic separation;

Subsequently, the particles are ground into<1mm powder using equipment such as a grinding machine. After screening, the coarse powder is used for strengthening concrete and artificial stone (with a dosage of<15%), while the fine powder is used as plastic (PP, PE) filler (with a dosage of 10-30%). High value scenarios can use pyrolysis or solvent decomposition methods to thoroughly separate glass fibers from resins and recover pure fibers for composite material regeneration. During the process, dust removal and exhaust gas purification equipment are required to control pollution emissions and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
