Recycling Background

Aluminum composite panels (ACP)—also known as aluminum-plastic composite sheets—are lightweight, high-strength materials widely used in building facades, interior decoration, and advertising signage. Composed of aluminum sheets bonded to polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) cores, ACP offers durability and design flexibility.

As buildings are renovated and signage replaced, ACP waste accumulates rapidly. Without proper recycling, this waste wastes valuable aluminum and plastic resources while polluting landfills. ACP recycling recovers both materials, cuts raw material costs by up to 60%, and supports sustainable development in the construction and petrochemical industries.

Five Recycling Methods Compared

Five aluminum composite panel recycling methods have been developed, but most have critical flaws:

Method 1 — Melting and Re-molding: Crushed ACP is heated and reformed into products like flowerpots or pipes. This approach yields low recovery rates for both aluminum and plastic, wasting valuable metal content.

Method 2 — Open Burning: Plastic is burned off to recover aluminum. This releases toxic fumes (dioxins, furans) that pollute air and soil. High temperatures also oxidize 10–30% of aluminum, degrading metal quality and reducing resale value.

Method 3 — Plasma Vaporization: A hot plasma furnace vaporizes aluminum and plastic at 15,000–50,000°C. Aluminum sinks and casts into ingots; plastic condenses into chemical feedstock. While effective, this method demands massive capital investment and extreme energy consumption, limiting commercial viability.

Method 4 — Chemical Separation: ACP is soaked in strong acid or alkali solutions to dissolve the plastic layer. This causes severe environmental pollution, equipment corrosion, and aluminum dissolution losses. Regulatory restrictions and safety hazards make industrial scaling nearly impossible.

Method 5 — Dry Physical Separation

This ACP recycling plant uses mechanical crushing, grinding, screening, and electrostatic separation—no chemicals, no burning, zero pollution. The process flow is:

Crushing: Waste ACP is fed into a crusher, reducing particle size to <12mm.
Grinding: Material enters a grinding mill, achieving ≤3mm particle size for effective separation.
Screening: A vibrating screen sorts material by size. Particles >3mm are primarily plastic film; particles ≤3mm proceed to separation.
Electrostatic Separation: The fine fraction passes through high-voltage electrostatic separators, splitting aluminum powder from plastic powder with >98% purity.
